One definition of polymorphic perversion has been identified by Freud as mankind’s instinctual drive for sexual pleasure. These libidinal urges can be derived from any part of the body & a multifarious expanse of objects. Think of the film  Annie Hall. Alvy mentions his affinity for Annie’s ability to extract erotic pleasure from being caressed practically anywhere. It was as if her nerve-ending were attuned to the sense of touch. This sounds almost synonymous with the psychological definition of the term “fetish.”  Fetish is defined as “any object or non-genital part of the body that causes a habitual erotic response or fixation”.  So, this is all leading up to sexual synesthesia and how it may possible relate to the realm of exotic fetishes and fantasies.

 

But first, what exactly is Synesthesia?

It’s defined as being a neurological phenomenon in which a person’s brain is cross wired in its responses to stimuli. Poets, artists and writers often speak in terms such as “painting with a rainbow of words.” Or, “tasting the bitter ash of defeat”. Although this may sound fanciful, modern science has found through extensive brain imaging that some people literally experience a crossed impression of the senses.
For example, the regions of the brain that regulate the visual processing field might respond when a subject with synesthesia is exposed to say, a smell. The images of the intracranial activity would show not just the olfactory section of the brain lighting up with activity but to other regions not typically associated to that active by the sense of smell. Kinda crazy huh?

The most common form of synesthesia is grapheme-color synesthesia. This is when people perceive individual letters of the alphabet and numbers to be “shaded” or “tinged” with a color. Other synesthetes commingle sounds with scents, sounds with shapes. Or, shapes with flavors.

The psychedelic 60s seem to be full of “mind-expanding” experiences that are similar. However a better example that doesn’t involve a synthetic induced state would be  Fantasia;  a great film.  It expresses “seeing music” as it is interpreted by Disney’s artists in multiple vignettes for classic works of music. Perhaps everyone can experience a similar phenomenon akin to that of synesthesia by using their imaginations and exercising that creative “muscle” through meditations.

This seems feasible considering scientists have found evidence that our brains are capable of restructuring themselves and can rewire certain parts of itself when it recognizes the need for an adaption. They can develop and change throughout life. This is known as “neuroplasticity.” Therefore, if  we are in some ways capable of rewiring our cognitive pathway, might we be able to tap into new ways of processing our imprinted sense memories. This bodes for interesting sexual implications and exploring fetish fantasies in a new way. If nothing else, it makes for some erotic masturbation trance opportunities.

    Oh my! This post was very interesting to read, I knew very little about those big words you used, but I have to say that I have experience sexual synesthesia in my life and it is very intense and very enjoyable. But, I am sure that any lucky guy that comes across a sexy lady like yourself can awaken that side of him.

    Hi, ok 1) I heard that the Disney cartoonists were all using opium when they did Fantasia.

    2) So does synesthesia answer how I fetishized petticoats? i.e. when I was a little boy and fell in love with girls (especially a babysitter who was about 16) who all were wearing petticoats? (approx. ’58,’59ish, when I was say 7ish or 8ish yrs old) and especially then finding my older sister’s petticoat in the basement laundry and thrilling to the shame of wearing it? I even buried my boy clothes in the backyard. I dunno, really!, maybe I was genetically predisposed and all that was just a chance to express. The shaming was intense and I loved it. The shame has a flavor and an orangish color. I was both paralyzed and super excited at the same time.
    You women here are so smart that you probably can figure this out! I’m shaking and nervous.
